JCPenney among several retail chains opening stores in Turkey Creek

Susan Gibson and her friend, Gloria Gunderman, were on their way to eat lunch in West Knoxville when they drove by the new JCPenney store in Turkey Creek.

"I said, 'Okay. JCPenney is open. We're hitting it on the way home,' " Gibson recounted earlier this week as the pair browsed among the children's clothes.

The Roane County residents were among the hundreds of curious shoppers who have filled up the parking lot of the new 104,000-square-foot store since it opened last Saturday. A ribbon-cutting ceremony will be Friday at 8:45 a.m.

"It's like Christmas in March. I'm loving it," said store manager Tracey Hitson, who has worked for JCPenney 30 years. "It's been a long time coming, and I'm thrilled to be a part of it."

The freestanding JCPenney at 11534 Parkside Drive is a single-level store that is similar to its other locations in Knoxville, except it has a 1,500-square-foot Sephora beauty store inside. Shopping carts are available and cashiers are stationed in the front of the store for quick checkout.

About 100 employees were hired for the new store, which Hitson said will be a draw for residents living in Farragut and outlying counties.

Farragut mom Jennifer Morton, who decided to check out the store with her two young daughters, said she's appreciates the convenience.

"I'm excited more things are coming this way because it saves me from having to go to the mall," Morton said.

Carrie Armstrong of Roane County, who was browsing cosmetics at Sephora, said she was glad to see that the store has all the same products she typically gets.

"I usually shop at Sephora in West Town Mall, but this is closer," Armstrong said.

JCPenney is among several new national retailers that have opened or will open soon in the Turkey Creek development.

Marshalls opens its new store at 11455 Parkside Drive today. It replaces its store in West Knoxville at 9329 Kingston Pike at the Market Place shopping center.

A 30,000-square-foot Belk Men's and Home store located adjacent to its Belk Women's and Kids store also is open. Off Broadway Shoes will open within the next two weeks.
